Even though you don’t have the funds to pay your tax, the first thing you should make sure you do is to file your return ASAP. After this, if you can't make a full payment, you should pay as much as you can and then contact Revenue immediately to explain the shortfall. Over the past number of years Revenue have become more lenient in this regard and are willing to work with individuals, if they are honest and upfront regarding under/late payments of tax.

The issue of interest on your late payment is also something to consider. Revenue are obloged to charge this but in some cases may waive it for example if the payment is made in a timely manner and you have legitimate reason for not paying.

Your accountant may be able to contact Revenue on your behalf and agree a late payment date.
