At TaxAssist Accountants we have seen a huge increase in calls and enquiries from influencers and others working in the growing creator economy. This is due to the growth in the sector but also because Revenue have begun to target these individuals. Last month it was reported in the Irish Times, on RTÉ, and in other news outlets that Revenue have been targeting online influencers and have sent over 450 compliance notices since 2023.

Tadhg Moriarty, Tax & Client Services Lead, at TaxAssist Accountants advises that Revenue will not ignore people that do not fulfil their tax obligations and their attention on the sector will continue to grow.

He says, “Due to the nature of work influencers do, and the fact they are so highly visible online it is likely that Revenue will become aware of you and send a form of compliance intervention.”

The people already reaching out know they need to file tax returns and are coming to us to help organise their tax affairs. But with thousands of Irish creators building brands and businesses on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube there are more creators and influencers out there that may not be tax compliant. Some may not realise that they are legally required to file tax returns, while others are kicking the ball down the road as Revenue have not yet published specific guidance around the area of influencers.

Tadhg finished by saying - “The risk for those that do not file returns is that they will be exposed to financial penalties, and they may be chosen for a Revenue audit. At TaxAssist Accountants we are advising people to act now and to not wait and see what Revenue will do. The fact is that the general principles of Irish tax law apply to influencers, just as they do to other self-employed individuals, and they need to pay tax accordingly.”

If you are unsure about your tax obligations, you can engage with a professional. Every year at TaxAssist Accountants we file thousands of returns for people in similar situations and understand the complexities surrounding Income Tax and Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT). You can contact us today and set up a meeting to get a quote for us to file your returns.
