Lack of postcodes hindering business, experts say

Experts have claimed a lack of postcodes across the country is costing businesses both time and money.

As the Irish Times reports, Chief Executive of Retail Excellence Ireland David Fitzsimons believes a postcode system would help Ireland to become a more competitive market.

He was quoted as saying: “;If you were cynical, you’d almost think the government was doing it on purpose as it gives An Post a huge advantage.

“;The State postal service has an advantage over newcomers as their postmen know all the addresses from years and years of delivery.”

This sentiment was echoed by Geoff Scully, Commercial Director of Littlewoods Ireland, who argued that without a postcode system, a lack of competition will remain, meaning costs will fail to decline.

Mr Scully highlighted in particular that e-commerce and home shopping businesses were suffering as even the limited postcode system in Dublin was too broad to narrow down exact locations.
