Revenue update the tax return form every year for budgetary and operational reasons, and this year is no different.

Here are 3 new things to look out for this year:

1. An Expanded Personal Details Page

The first section of the form 11 is a personal details section. This year a new section has been added. On this new screen you will see information on a person’s obligations. It is designed to increase awareness about the requirement to file a form 11. It will also advise you how to update the Revenue record if your circumstances have changed.

This section basically helps to confirm if you actually need to file a Form 11. Assuming you are sure you do need to file you can tick the box to confirm you need to file and move on to the next section.

2. More prefilled information

In some sections, including the parts on rental income, you will see more prefilled information than used to exist in previous years.

The sections of the form that have prefilled information will have yellow ticks beside them - make sure to check that this information is correct.

Once you are happy that what is on the form is right you need to accept this prefilled information to validate it. The ticks will then turn white.

3. Don’t forget to claim for remote working!

In previous years, some people did not bother completing this section as the saving may have been very small. However, with the increase in energy prices it may be time to consider filling it in.

This year additional questions are included to assist you in calculating claims for expenses due in respect of remote working. You will now also have to input the number of days worked from home.

If you have uploaded receipts in Revenue’s receipts tracker, the information will be prefilled to a table in this section.

To make a claim you should input:

  1. 10% of your utility bills (heat and electricity)
  2. 30% of your broadband cost
  3. the number of days worked remotely

Then by clicking Calculate it will populate the remote working (eWorking) expenses field with the correct calculation.

Top tip: If you have never claimed for remote working before it is possible to claim it for the prior year once you have the records to support it.
