You can amend a tax return and self assessment by notifying the Revenue either in writing or electronically and letting them know what the error is and how it occurred.

Generally, amendments can be made to self assessed tax returns up to four years after the end of the chargeable period to amend it if you notice a mistake. Amendments cannot be made if a Revenue office has started enquiries, an investigation or an audit.

If you owe tax due to the amendment, Revenue will reissue a notice of assessment and the liability will be due right away. If you are owed a refund after amending your return, the Revenue will either issue a refund or offset against other tax liabilities that are outstanding.

Revenue penalties and/or interest may be applied to any liabilities that come about due to the amendment; these charges are at Revenue’s discretion and are unlikely to be applied if a genuine mistake occurred.

If preparing your tax return is becoming a burden, please feel free to contact us. Your local TaxAssist Accountant would be happy to prepare your return for you. This should ensure your return is accurate and prepared in good time; and your TaxAssist Accountant will also look for any tax saving opportunities.
