A. Firstly you are correct, PAYE Modernisation will come in to force on 01 January 2019. This will be a fundamental change in how employers report details of their employees and the wages that they pay them.

Essentially employers will be required to report in “Real Time” from the above date. What that means is that you will be required to prepare and complete an online report for Revenue each and every time you pay your employees. For example if you pay them weekly you will need to file an online return each week detailing their name, pps no., gross wages, taxes deducted along with other important information.

The preparation work for this new regime begins now! As an example, Revenue have mandated that each employer will have to file a return over the coming months which has a detailed listing of each employee on their books including names, pps no’s etc.

You should also be sitting down with your accountant now to ensure that your current payroll system will facilitate the filing of reports under PAYE Modernisation as Revenue have indicated that once the regime commences in 2019 they expect all employers to adhere to the new rules and those who don’t will face stiff penalties for non-compliance.
