There's been further good news for small businesses in Dublin after a research institute in the city was given funding to create new jobs.

The Crann nanotechnology centre has been given €8 million in funding for the coming year - a figure around 60 per cent higher than in 2011, the Irish Times reports.

And this shows the strength in Ireland's science and technology sector - one that could allow small firms to thrive in the future.

Minister for Jobs Richard Bruton told the news provider: "A key part of the government's plans for jobs and growth is ensuring not only that we continue to develop good ideas through scientific research, but also crucially that we turn more of them into products, services and ultimately good jobs."

Meanwhile, around 200 new jobs are set to be created in Dublin and Galway as part of expansion by Fidelity Investments and mobile gaming firm Swrve.
