Questions and Answers
Property Tax
Q: I sold my home and the Revenue are now telling me I owe more property tax can I appeal this?
A: If the sale price you have agreed on your property brings you into a higher valuation band than was originally declared when you filed your LPT Return, you may need to confirm whether specific written clearance is required from Revenue (this is in addition to the general online clearance). However, if you correctly valued your house at the start you will more than likely not have to pay more property tax.
You can appeal this issue to the Revenue. First of all you will need to ensure all outstanding LPT returns have in fact been filed and paid. If you are satisfied that all returns are in order then you should start preparing a written appeal or you can ask your accountant for assistance in dealing with Revenue.
Your appeal should include all the relevant documentation, i.e. evidence of filed and paid returns (print outs from Revenue online), supporting documentation surrounding the original valuation of the property for LPT purposes (possibly information from the Property price register that supports your original valuation).
